Do you hear the people sing?

2015 has started brutally.

Paris, my adoptive city, has been a victim of cold-blooded cruelty, and Lebanon, my motherland, has met, yet again, animalism in its different forms.

And in the face of this barbarity,

There are the ones who are angry, revolted, they are the exclamation-point users, the superlative abusers, social networks has made it easier for them to get their anger out. And I get them.

Then there are the ones who are deeply saddened, confused and still shaky about all that has happened. They are the nostalgic philosophers and slightly pessimistic thinkers. And I get them.

Then there are the ones that aren’t really sure about how they want to react. They want the whole story, but they are convinced that something is definitely wrong. And I get them.

Then, there are the ones who are proud to see their country unite and make history, they are the ones who smile, even in an incredibly crowded metro, and strike conversations with strangers in the demonstration because they feel like they are connected today. And I get them.

And then there are the ones that I don’t get.
The ones that want to say something different just because they can. The ones that immediately start denigrating instead of mourning, criticizing instead of rallying with the rest for just one day.

Yes, there are other atrocities everywhere in the world, but you know what? I can be Charlie, Ahmed, Yves, Tripoli, Nigeria, Syria, Samir, Gebran, and many others. That’s the beauty of humanity. We have empathy, and it’s endless.

How about we all be against violence and barbarity, wherever it is and whoever it is against?

Call me naive, but I believe that today’s march in Paris was not a hypocritical movement, but rather a big fat proof that our innate need for justice and compassion is stronger than any half-brained extremist.

“Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!

Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?

Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free

Violently Wild

“Sometimes there is no warning. Things occur in seconds. Everything changes. You’re alive. You’re dead. And things move on.

We are paper thin. We exist on luck amid the percentages, temporarily. And that’s the best part and the worse part, the temporal factor. And there’s nothing you can do about it. You can sit on top of a mountain and meditate for decades and it’s not going to alter. You can alter yourself into acceptability but maybe that’s wrong too. Maybe we think too much. Feel more, think less.”

Even the most brilliant minds preach feelings over thoughts.

Holding the Universe Together

This Smail is sent from a gate in the middle of an airport bustling with people going home for the holidays.
So if you are too, “home” by Dotan is the only song you need on your playlist today. Put the volume up, we’re coming home!
