Fly Me To The Moon

“Fly me to the moon
And let me play among the stars
Let me see what spring is like
On Jupiter and Mars

In other words, hold my hand
In other words, baby, kiss me”

Good People

Last year, on a sunny afternoon, Mia and I went biking on the waterfront. There were noisy families, happy couples, joggers, bikers, groups of friends; in sum, a lot of people running around.

And then, there was Ali, the security guard. Time had drawn wonderful wrinkles on his face, his hair had turned white, his eyes had obviously seen a lot, and his posture testified to the many years of his life.

His primary task was to ensure everyone followed the rules (like for example: no bikes in the pedestrian area, no cigarette buds on the floor, etc…). While any other Lebanese official would have felt in a power position and taken an arrogant attitude, Ali was there, greeting people, genuinely smiling to everyone and making the best out of his job. At one point, Mia and I were trying to take a picture of us two, he came to us and asked whether we wanted him to take our picture. It was as if he was really trying to make everyone enjoy their time, and he looked truly happy doing it.

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I have something for old people. So I couldn’t not say anything and after we thanked him for the picture, I told him, in all honesty, how nice it was to see someone smile so candidly at their job.

A few minutes later, there we were, having one of the nicest conversations with him, we talked about happiness and family, then he took out of his wallet the picture of his three children and of his grand child “Celine”. We talked for a few minutes and this simple encounter made our day. It wasn’t so much about the conversation itself, but rather about the nice feeling you get when you meet someone so authentic that it gives you faith in good people again.

Just Ask

“I want to know you. You seem like someone worth knowing. Every day I feel like I’m surrounded by people with hard edges and sour faces but I get the sense that you’re different. Too often people seem to think that they have the answers to everything. Their faces are trapped in permascowls and they can’t be bothered with anything besides their own narcissism. You aren’t like that. You still ask questions. You’re still looking for the answers.” Ryan O’Connell (I Want To Know You)

Be the one that asks questions. Not the narcissistic one. It’s easy to talk about yourself, what matters is listening to other people talking about them.
